Care That Fits Every Stage of Healing:

HBOT can be used at different stages of care, depending on your needs and your surgeon’s advice.

  • Pre-Surgery Preparation: Optimize tissue health before your procedure to help with faster recovery
  • Post-Surgery Recovery: Reduces Inflammation. Complements Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy to Accelerate Healing and Support a Faster Return to Activity
  • Injury Treatment: Supports healing of fractures, torn ligaments, and traumatic injuries

Orthopedic Procedures & Conditions We Support:

  • Joint Procedures: Total replacements (knee, hip, shoulder), arthroscopic repairs (ACL, meniscus, rotator cuff)
  • Hand & Wrist Surgery: Carpal tunnel release, trigger finger repair, fracture fixation, tendon repairs, crush injuries, complex hand trauma
  • Spine care: Spine surgeries, fusions, and complex revision procedures
  • Sports Injuries: Tendon/ligament tears, post-traumatic injuries, chronic pain
  • Complex Cases & Complications: fracture repair, non-healing fractures, revision surgeries. Compromised wound healing, infections, and refractory cases

How HBOT Works:

After injury or surgery, swelling and reduced blood flow can limit oxygen delivery to healing tissue. Hyperbaric therapy super saturates your plasma in addition to the natural oxygenation that your red blood cells deliver.  The diffusion of oxygen directly off the plasma, will force oxygen 4x deeper into the tissue than the normal diffusion of oxygen in red blood cells. This is particularly helpful in tissues that receive poor circulation.

Many orthopedic patients report reduced pain levels and may have a decreased need for pain medication as HBOT reduces inflammation and supports tissue healing. While individual results vary, addressing the root causes of post-surgical pain -surgerized tissue and inflammation – often leads to more effective pain management than mere symptom relief.

Results:

  • Reduced inflammation and swelling
  • Accelerated & optimized bone and soft tissue healing
  • Enhanced wound recovery
  • Supports pain reduction and enhances mobility

Supports faster recovery during rehabilitation, promotes an earlier return to daily activities, and helps lower the risk of complications during the healing process.

The science: HBOT promotes new capillary and blood vessel growth, increases collagen production, and enhances your body’s natural healing mechanisms at the cellular level. It supports mitochondrial function to provide more energy for healing.

FAQs: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Orthopedic Recovery

  • What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) and how does it help orthopedic recovery?

HBOT is a medical treatment that delivers 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber. Increased oxygen helps bones, joints, muscles, and connective tissues heal faster, reduces inflammation, supports tissue repair, and can shorten overall recovery time after orthopedic surgery.

  • Which orthopedic procedures can benefit from HBOT?

Hyperbaric oxygen can support recovery after joint replacements, arthroscopic procedures (like ACL or rotator cuff repairs), spine surgeries, fracture repair, tendon and ligament surgeries, cartilage restoration, post-traumatic injuries, and certain bone or joint infections.

  • When should I start HBOT after surgery, and how many sessions will I need?

Treatment plans are personalized, but HBOT may begin shortly after surgery to support healing. Typical recommendations are:

    • Minor procedures: 5–15 sessions
    • Moderate surgeries: 10–25 sessions
    • Complex or reconstructive procedures: 20–40 sessions
Sessions are usually once daily, Monday through Friday.
  • Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy safe, and are there any side effects?

HBOT is a non-invasive, well-studied therapy with a strong safety record when administered by trained medical professionals. Most patients tolerate it very well. Mild side effects can include temporary ear pressure or mild fatigue, but serious complications are rare. Your Hyperbaric Physician will review safety and answer any questions during your complimentary consultation.
