Understanding Concussions vs. Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)
Concussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are related conditions that differ mainly in severity and duration of symptoms. A concussion can result from a blunt force to the head or from exposure to strong energy transfers, such as an explosion, and is often associated with a brief loss of consciousness. Symptoms are generally milder and resolve more quickly. People with concussions may experience confusion, irritability, headaches, difficulty sleeping, seizures, slurred speech, fatigue, or nausea. All concussions are considered mild forms of TBI, but not all TBIs are concussions—TBIs are typically much more severe.
